Winter is coming, motorists feel the pain of buying snow tires
Winter is almost here, and for many of us, that means it’s time to prepare our cars for Erie’s infamous snowstorms.
However, a local tire shop said if you had to buy snow tires…be prepared to pay.
Tires are arguably the most important component of a car, according to a Flynn’s Tire employee, who added that despite rising prices, snow tires have been in high demand. The winter season is fast approaching and residents of Erie are beginning to prepare for winter.
Inflation and a volatile economy have impacted the price of travel along with gas prices, and this continues to impact other vehicle necessities.
The price of snow tires has risen 55% this year, according to a representative from Flynn’s Tire.
“When it comes to price trends, everyone knows that things are more expensive to transport, the logistics of shipping, those costs have gone up, and material costs have gone up. There’s a slight price increase, and that’s a general phenomenon of the economy,” said Paul Schuler, sales and customer service, Flynn’s Tire and Auto Service.
Schuler said that during the pandemic, the demand for snow tires was not as high. Now people are flocking to stores to make up for previous years of procrastination.
“So for that reason there has been an increase in activity here. People are now doing what they should have been doing a year, two years, three years ago. Activity is a bit more robust right now,” Schuler added.
Erie residents are no strangers to the snowy conditions the area faces every winter, which further shows the importance of your tire tread.
“Tires are perhaps the most critical component of a vehicle. You really have to pay attention to tire quality and ride quality for safety and economy. The road conditions here, the quality of the weather, all of those things combined show that tires are a very important item to maintain and manage,” Schuler said.
Even if your vehicle has all-wheel drive, winter tires are still recommended by experts to maximize driver and passenger safety on the road. If you need a new set of tires, expect to pay a little more this year.
