Five Cup teams penalized for inspection failures in Las Vegas
Five NASCAR Cup Series drivers will lose a team member at Las Vegas Motor Speedway due to pre-qualifying inspection failures.
The cars of Kevin Harvick (#4 Stewart-Haas Racing), Chase Elliott (#9 Hendrick Motorsports), Harrison Burton (#21 Wood Brothers Racing), Todd Gilliland (#38 Front Row Motorsports) and Josh Bilicki ( No. 77 Spire Motorsports) failed inspection twice on Friday. All five riders will be allowed to qualify for the Pennzoil 400, but one crew member was ejected for the rest of the weekend, and the teams all lost pit selection.
Robert Smith (Car Manager Harvick), Matt Barndt (Car Manager Elliott), Cody Sauls (Car Manager Burton), Tony Manzer (Car Manager Gilliland) and Nicholas Sowa (Engineer Bilicki) were expelled.
The cars all passed a third inspection.
Practice and qualifying in Las Vegas takes place on Saturday afternoon. NASCAR is extending practice this weekend to 35 minutes (and will not be split into groups) instead of the 15 minutes teams received last weekend at Auto Club Speedway. Track activity begins at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Kyle Larson is the defending winner of the race.
