Drivers have started using a Swansea multi-storey car park as a drift track
Boy runners are claimed to be drifting around the multi-storey car park near Swansea station, sparking fears that someone could be seriously injured or killed. Some drivers say they find it difficult to park or leave the High Street site because of the problems.
Swansea Police and Council have been alerted to the issue and officers have called on drivers to act responsibly. South Wales Police said they had stepped up patrols in the area as a result.
A resident of Swansea, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘Does anyone know why the station’s multi-storey car park has become a hangout for budding vagabonds? Large crowds of people with cars race in the parking lot making it difficult to start and use. I hope Swansea Council is aware of this.

The car park was once described as ‘disgusting’ by Welsh Senedd member Bethan Sayed. In 2019 Plaid Cymru MS, who did not stand for re-election in 2021, said following a visit: ‘If you come to Swansea as a tourist or as a local looking to do some shopping is absolutely disgusting. The elevators don’t work, there are wires sticking out of the walls and the smell is really bad. I go to the middle of Swansea a lot and park in this car park often. It wasn’t great for years, but it’s really bad now.”
It then underwent a refurbishment with fresh paint, new lighting and additional CCTV.
Following the latest reports of its misuse, some defended the presence of the drivers and said they felt it was better than cruising the streets of Swansea. Unfortunately, it seems that some pilots already do this. Problems with boy racers have also been reported in Mumbles, where it is claimed they are turning the area into a racetrack, leading to complaints from residents about noisy cars. A spokesman for Swansea Council said of the High Street car park issue: “This has been brought to our attention and we are liaising with South Wales Police to ensure it does not happen again. “
Local Police Inspector Matt Otteson said: ‘We are aware of concerns about the High Street multi-storey car park, with the car park being used as a meeting area for cars, and have received reports of dangerous driving at this location.
“While the majority of car enthusiasts are law-abiding and passionate about their vehicles, these encounters can cause disruption and disruption to other car park users, as well as an unacceptable risk to public safety. We ask everyone drivers to act responsibly and drive safely. We will not allow such behavior to go unchallenged and we have stepped up patrols in the area and will closely monitor the situation.
