One of the best ways to grow a store goes through an onboarding process that sets up a new hire for success. Employees cannot be effective assets if they don’t know exactly what to do and how to do it.

Confident employees take ownership of their new roles. With clarity, new hires can meet and exceed your expectations because they will have a sense of what success looks like.

“In many cases, a shop foreman should spend at least two working days getting onboarded,” says David Askwith, operations manager for AutoStream Car Care in Maryland. “It’s important to show new hires to see the shop layout, introduce them to the team, show them the test drive and ensure they have a path to success.”

AutoStream Car Care has eight locations in Maryland, with 70 employees. Their average car count is 1,500 per month, with an average store size of 1,500 to 7,500 square feet. AutoStream Car Care’s revenue is $12.5 million per year.

Here are five ways to perfect your store onboarding process and set up new hires for success.

1. Streamline Employee Orientation

Creating a smooth employee orientation process is essential. This is a new employee’s first exposure to your store – what they experience will affect their time as an employee.

Automation can help. You can create a series of videos in a company portal that trains the new employee on various aspects of their job before they set foot on the shop floor. You can automate some aspects of paperwork and save time.

“We have a system and upload all of our training materials and videos to software called Trainual. We make it clear what our expectations are and allow new hires to get certified,” says Askwith.

The way you train new hires needs to be updated and adapted to changes in your store. Askwith notes that who trains a new recruit is critical to ensuring success. He recommends that one or a few key people train new recruits.

“We try to have every new hire trained at each of our locations to get a sense of how we do things. We like to touch base in every part of the process and make sure new hires know they have support,” says Askwith.

2. Develop clear HR documents

New hires need access to materials that allow them to read and gain insight into your store’s processes. They will have questions about their new work environment and how to handle sensitive topics.

“Store owners should have an employee handbook that covers all common questions and processes,” says Tony Whatley, owner of 365 Drivenand co-founder of LS1Techan online automotive performance community, which has sold for millions.

Whatley notes that your material should cover:

  • Expectations regarding the start and end times of the working day
  • What are the public holidays
  • How to request a vacation
  • Dress code
  • Work area cleanliness and ordering expectations

  • Payroll and payment schedule
  • Skills, education and certification requirements
  • Discipline and corrective action process
  • Communication process
  • Telephone, smoking, controlled substances, alcohol, break policies

Again, automation can help distribute and make your HR materials easily accessible to new hires (and all employees).

3. Have defined work areas

As humans, we appreciate having our own space. You may own the store, but the goal is for new hires to embrace their new role – having their own space can help.

“Each tech should have a designated work area with room to complete tasks,” Whatley explains. “Don’t force the new person to clean up the mess left behind by the last one. Welcome new hires by providing them with a fresh, ready-to-use workspace.”

The union local representing New York City public sector clerical workers has been placed under administration by its international union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), following allegations financial mismanagement, THE CITY has learned.

District Council 37 Local 1549 has announced that the local’s day-to-day operations are under the control of the international union “with immediate effect” following an audit which revealed “serious deficiencies and numerous violations of the AFSCME Financial Standards Code,” according to a September 19 letter to rank and file members.

A draft version of Audit obtained by THE CITY revealed questionable payments to a former local union employee working as a consultant, gift cards given to union staffers that were not properly tracked and $45,500 in car service charges per the ousted president of Local 1549, Eddie Rodriguez, who should never have been covered by the union.

Also reported: $257,000 in American Express fees, where “in many cases the union business purpose of the fees was not explained.” Listeners said, “The practices of Local 1549 here are very concerning.

The audit lasted from January 2020 to April 2022. Henry Garrido, executive director of DC 37, said union members took the complaint that triggered the audit directly to AFSCME.

The administration is the latest financial scandal for Local 1549, whose members are among the lowest paid workers in the city. In 2001, Al Diopthe former president of the local which now has 12,000 members, has been condemned up to four years in prison for rigging a union election and stealing union funds.

DC 37, the city’s largest public sector union, is preparing to negotiate with the Adams administration for a new contract covering about 100,000 workers. Negotiation is expected to begin in the coming months – even as the city faces massive budget deficits. Unions meanwhile are trying to make a difficult transition to a new privatized health insurance plan in an effort to save money.

“We are committed to getting the best deal possible for our members, and we are focused on addressing a difficult issue with health care,” Garrido said in an interview with THE CITY on Wednesday. “So to me, while we may maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any type of misconduct or anything like that, our goal is to provide service to our members. It’s not going to be a distraction or anything. either for what we must do to obtain and offer our members in the best possible way.

‘Emergency situation’

AFSCME spokeswoman Tracey Conaty confirmed the content of the letter, adding that the matter is pending an internal court hearing by the international union next month. She declined to comment further.

“In my opinion, a contingency exists in Office Administrative Employees, New York, New York Local 1549, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, in that the dissipation or loss of funds or assets of the local is under threat and that the local is acting in violation of the International Constitution,” AFSCME President Lee Saunders wrote in a Sept. 19 suspension notice to union leaders cited in the statement to members of the base. “Therefore, pursuant to Article IX, Section 37 of the International Constitution, I place AFSCME Local Lodge 1549 into administration, pending notice and hearing, effective immediately.”

Rodriguez and the rest of Local 1549’s senior management were immediately removed from their positions. The local — which has 12 full-time employees — is now led by James HowelAFCME Eastern Regional Director, who earned $271,093 in 2019.

Proponents argue that the audit findings described financial practices at many other DC 37 establishments. 56 inhabitants. They also argue that the AFSCME takeover is politically motivated.

Garrido runs all union operations with an executive council, while the DC 37 president has a lesser role – chairing meetings of shop stewards, presidents, and the executive council.

“I think it’s political because the issues they noted persist in most locals,” said Arthur Schwartz, an attorney who has represented many members who have opposed DC 37 leaders.

“I have no idea what he’s talking about,” Garrido told THE CITY in response.

“This behavior does not occur in other locals,” he added. “That is patently untrue.”

A group of people who challenged Francois’s re-election as leader of Local 372 last year have alleged he was paid $296,015 in abusive overtime on top of his salary, according to The Chef. Overtime has long been prohibited for local presidents at DC 37.

Francois did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Schwartz, who represents Francois’ opposition, noted that the local’s cash flow has declined by an average of about $1 million a year since 2015. Francois asked AFSCME to audit the chapter’s finances local.

Payment not verified

As for the Local 1549 audit, the 10-page assessment was based on a “review of policies, minutes, financial statements and a sample test of the Local’s accounting records.”

The review first challenged the salary paid to Ralph Palladino, the local’s second vice-president, who retired in December 2021. In total, he received $170,470 to cover 71 days of unpaid vacation. used, 43 compensatory days and 14.3 years of severance pay. Other DC 37 locals have similar packages, including a so-called severance package for retiring officers, according to labor insiders.

The audit questioned Palladino’s stored compensation time and noted that there was no evidence that the union’s executive board approved overall “cashouts” for him.

“We were presented with no evidence that full-time officers come in and out of work on the clock or have a set number of hours per day or week that they work,” the audit said. “We cannot verify that the time off accrued and paid has been properly documented and paid or even the basis for the claim that time off should be awarded for work performed.”

Local leaders should also create a “clearly defined policy” for pension payments, the audit added. “The Local should consider whether maintaining these substantial retirement benefits for its officers is in the best interest of the membership,” the Financial Review said.

Palladino, who for years was one of the local’s loudest cheerleaders and activists, said he was unaware of the audit and declined to comment.

The audit also found that the local used Executive Charge Inc., a black car service, to provide rides for officers and staff.

In total, the union spent $51,301 including $45,500 for the use of Rodriguez’s car service from January 2020 to April 2022, according to the audit. Rodriguez was driven about 109 times to get from home to office or vice versa, according to the review.

“That averages out to $288 for each commute trip,” the audit says. “Travel is a personal expense and should not be paid for or reimbursed by the local unless it is declared as… taxable wages. »

Rodriguez did not report the use as taxable compensation and it was not included in his annual W-2s, the review noted. “This is a serious shortcoming,” the audit said, noting that there have been “several” times the union has been hit with extra “waiting time” for car service for Rodriguez ranging from $42 to $168.

The audit also revealed that the union was using Dan Persons, a former union employee, as a consultant. He was paid $2,000 a month for an annual total of $24,000. As part of this agreement, he provided monthly invoices detailing the work performed. “But our review of the invoices indicates that it copies the same work done across multiple monthly invoices,” the audit said.

Renee Gainer, a former division manager at DC 37, was also paid $2,000 a month as a consultant for the local, according to Financial Review. There was no formal consultancy agreement and her invoices also indicate “that she also copies the same work performed on multiple monthly invoices”, the audit said.

A labor expert said the local takeover by the international union was significant.

“It’s a serious thing,” said Joshua Freeman, labor historian and author of the book “Working Class New York.”

The staff of The Duncan Banner celebrated a milestone on September 10, 2022, as we celebrated the newspaper’s 130th anniversary.

One of the oldest companies in Stephens County, The Duncan Banner was first published on September 9, 1892. Last Saturday we celebrated this with The Banner’s 130th anniversary which takes place between the 10th and the 7th Street on Main Street in Duncan across from The Banner Office.

Main Street Duncan hosted Wine’n on the Chisholm Trail at 10th and Main and The Banner’s birthday party filled everything else in the Main Street neighborhood through to 7th and Main.

The birthday party included bouncy houses, a rock climbing wall, firefighters, face painting, door prizes, food trucks, goodie bags, lots of booths and more.

We are proud of our history as one of Duncan’s oldest companies. The staff of The Banner have built on the work of those who have gone before us by bringing trusted local Stephens County news and advertising, produced by local people who live, work and play in the community to inform, educate and even entertain our citizens.

GAINESVILLE — Although the No. 18 Florida Gators come into Saturday’s game against USF bruised by the loss to Kentucky, first-year coach Billy Napier knows things could be worse.

Much worse.

As they were a dozen years ago in the last game Napier coached against the Bulls – a low-to-the-bowl loss that began his detour to one of the best jobs in the country and continues to shape the sport.

Napier entered Clemson’s 2010 season in good shape as the nation’s youngest major program offensive coordinator. The Tigers were 2-0 before an overtime loss to eventual national champion Auburn snowballed into a 6-6 draw. But ahead of the Meineke Car Care Bowl against USF, coach Dabo Swinney said he doesn’t anticipate any personnel changes.

“If I feel like there needs to be changes, I’ll make them…” Swinney told reporters. “But I’m not going to make a change just to make one.”

The Bulls forced his hand.

In front of what The Associated Press called a “small group of his disgruntled fans,” Clemson sputtered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Napier’s offense mustered just 296 yards – the fifth time in the last eight games that it has failed to reach 300. Looking back, Clemson’s low season was a blow caused by a drop in the roster. The Tigers had just lost All-American CJ Spiller to the NFL, and the next wave (DeAndre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins and Tajh Boyd) hadn’t arrived or weren’t ready for stardom yet.

“I’ll say this about that 2010 team: (Napier) did a great job,” said Brad Scott, a Napier mentor and assistant on that team. “We just didn’t have the talented players we would soon have.”

It didn’t matter. Something had to change.

Two days after the loss, Swinney fired Napier and running backs coach Andre Powell.

“It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me in my profession…,” Napier said during a spring stop in Tampa, “because I got a chance to go and work in Alabama as a ‘analyst”.

Spending 2011 under Nick Saban allowed Napier to replenish his network with Sabanites, including some who work for him now. Freed from the day-to-day responsibilities of a field assistant, Napier got to see firsthand how Saban’s famous process works.

“In that year,” Napier said in December, “I think I learned more than I learned in the previous 10.”

Napier used those lessons to build Louisiana into a Sun Belt powerhouse. The proven formula caught the attention of Gators administrators who wanted him to bring this plan to Florida.

A plan he might never have had, if not for that loss to the Bulls.

The aftershocks also reverberate elsewhere. Although Napier was not Saban’s first analyst, his second act in the profession validated the role. Fired coaches like Steve Sarkisian and Butch Jones (now the head coaches of Texas and Arkansas State) eventually followed.

Shortly after the embarrassing loss, Swinney boldly proclaimed the Tigers were about to begin the best decade in program history. Sure enough, Clemson overtook Florida State as the biggest heavyweight in the ACC and won two national titles.

Napier’s firing led Swinney to hire Chad Morris (now a USF analyst) as offensive coordinator. His success with the Tigers landed him the head coaching job at SMU, which allowed Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott to share the coordinator position. Scott used it as a springboard to take over USF, while Elliott is in his first year as Virginia’s head coach.

But the biggest transformation took place with Napier, who went from a top aide in a major program to a 31-year-old unemployed. Being in what he called a “very humiliated place” forced him to start over with low-level work that gave him the restart his career needed.

“It probably wasn’t that day,” Brad Scott said, “but he got up, didn’t he?”

The second annual Patriot Day in the Park was held on Saturday, September 10 at Pleasanton River Park.

Patriot Day in the Park was launched last year to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Woody Wilson of the Atascosa County Running Club came up with the idea. He wanted our community to show that we kept our promise and that we will never forget the sacrifices made and the lives lost in the event that changed our world.

Part of Patriot Day in the Park is a memorial ceremony to remember the lives lost on 9/11 and to honor our local veterans and first responders who continue to put their lives on the line to protect and serve. The opening of the ceremony began with the presentation of the nation’s colors by the Pleasanton JROTC and was followed by the Patriot Day in the Park 5k/one mile walk.

Guest speakers at the event included Deputy Senior Commander Mark Anderson of Post 4853 Mark Anderson, Mayor of Pleasanton Clint Powell, Pleasanton Fire Chief Mario Escobedo, Pleasanton Police Chief Ronald Sanchez and Atascosa EMT Bill Brietzke. A prayer was led by Pleasanton Church of Christ minister Robert Miller.

Chief Escobedo, along with other members of the Pleasanton Fire Department, created a wooden display that featured a 9/11 Memorial Flag that includes the names of those killed on 9/11.

“On the screen we have a memorial flag of the names of all the 9/11 victims,” Anderson said.

“Among those lost were 343 firefighters, 23 police officers, 37 Port Authority police officers, eight emergency medical technicians and paramedics and one patrolman who were all killed in the attack. It was a heartbreaking event, which is why, a year later, Patriot Day was proclaimed by President George W. Bush and is now recognized annually on 9/11.

Mayor Powell approached the dais and recalled where he was on 9/11. He explained how 9/11 changed the world and our security measures. As a pilot, Powell had to adapt to many safety protocol changes.

“All security measures are due to what happened that day,” Mayor Powell said. “As you’re sitting up there in the cockpit, all the paperwork is done, the passengers are on, we’re about to call to push and you tell them ‘you can close the main pilot door’ and then They closed the door behind you It’s a ballistic door And if we’re doing this today it’s because of what happened 21 years ago Thank you all for coming commemorate the event, but also celebrate the bravery of those who lost their lives that day. Chief Escobedo stressed the importance of honoring those who have already served.

“Don’t let this day go away,” Escobedo said. “Keep it in your mind and heart. Continue to honor those who served. Each entity.

Atascosa EMT Bill Brietzke was working in Arlington, Virginia when the first tower was hit by the plane. After being informed of the accident, it was moments later that he discovered that the Pentagon, about half a mile from his office, had also been hit.

“When we talk about how it changed America, it’s so true. It was a 180 degree turn. Security changed, everything changed. That was 21 years ago. We have took a big black eye that day, but we’re much stronger today,” Brietzke said.

Following the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony was the second annual Patriot Day 5K in the park.

The inaugural Patriot Day 5k raised over $3,000 and a check was donated to the local JROTC. The Pleasanton Express will publish the final amount for this year’s race in the coming weeks.

Nichole Brauchle was the women’s overall winner for the second time with a time of 22:57.3 and Paul Lloyd was the men’s overall winner with a time of 20:15.3.

Anna Shahan and Gary Samsel were the top male and female finishers.

“Slow down, you’re going too fast,” Simon and Garfunkel once warned.

Today, this musical advice could be the anthem of self-care – the act of making our own health and well-being a priority. While that might include kicking cobblestones, as suggested in the duo’s “59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” good self-care covers so much more.

“It’s overall wellness,” said Dr. Helen Lavretsky, resident professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, environmental and societal – self-care should address most of these components.”

But self-care often falls low on the list of priorities. Experts say he should be at the top.

“Often people think self-care is selfish and that you’re indulging yourself,” said Dr. Laxmi Mehta, who co-wrote an op-ed for the American Heart Association and other cardiology groups. on physician well-being and the importance of preventing burnout. Mehta is faculty director of the Gabbe Health and Well-Being program and director of the Women’s Preventive Cardiology and Cardiovascular Health Section at Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Lavretsky agreed. “It’s not a luxury, it’s a must,” she said.

Doctors have come up with these steps that anyone can take to better manage their overall well-being.

Pay attention to your body

“The first step is to listen to your body’s needs,” Lavretsky said. “In Western society, we are taught that we can drive empty forever. We create chronic diseases by not listening to our bodies. You listen to your car, because it won’t work if it’s broken. We don’t that with our body.”

This doesn’t just mean going to the doctor if you feel sick. This includes regular health and wellness exams to check blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, Mehta said. “Know those numbers and act on them.”

“Exercise is key,” Mehta said. “It not only helps physical well-being, but also mental well-being.”

Federal Physical Activity Guidelines ask for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both. The guidelines also discourage people from being sedentary.

“If you’re sitting eight to 10 hours a day, that’s not good,” Mehta said. “Allow time to get up and walk around.”

According to Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention, staying physically active can help people think, learn, solve problems, and maintain better emotional balance. If it’s hard to exercise regularly on a busy day, the CDC suggests taking short walks, dancing at home, and doing squats or marching in place during commercial breaks while watching TV. .

Research suggests moving for just three minutes once an hour can help control blood sugar.

Adopt a healthy diet

“Diet is important,” Mehta said, so eat healthy foods and avoid sugary drinks that can affect mood as well as physical well-being.

A Mediterranean-style eating pattern is among those supported by the AHA and federal dietary guidelines. It includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, and low to moderate amounts of dairy products, eggs, fish, and poultry. This dietary pattern is associated with better overall heart and brain health.

If it’s hard to find time to shop and cook during the work week, Mehta suggests planning for weekends and preparing foods that can be eaten throughout the week.

To breathe

Taking time to focus on breathing reduces stress levels, heart rate and blood pressure, said Lavretsky, who teaches breathing techniques as part of her practice. “Even a minute of breathing gets you out of stress overload and into a more thoughtful and controlled state,” she said. “You make wiser decisions and don’t have knee-jerk reactions. It’s a tool for self-regulation, and it’s good for self-care.”

Lavretsky teaches a technique called “box breathing” which involves inhaling for three seconds, holding your breath for three seconds, exhaling for three seconds, and pausing for three seconds before taking the next breath.

Tai chi, yoga and meditation all help people focus on their breathing, Mehta said. But just taking a few minutes each day to take a few deep breaths will help.

Avoid harmful substances and any excess

“The first thing to avoid is smoking,” Mehta said. It is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and a major risk factor for many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

All nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, should be avoided, she said.

“Avoid excess,” Lavretsky said. This includes not overeating, drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, or working too much. Eating and drinking excessively may seem like a quick fix, she said, “but they’ll never make anyone happy.”

And don’t spend too much time on social media, Mehta said. “If you have time for this, you definitely have time for yourself.”

Get enough sleep

The AHA recently added sleep duration — seven to nine hours a night for most adults — to its list of key metrics for good heart health, known as Life’s Essential 8. The list also includes no no smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising enough physical activity, and keeping blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, and blood sugar within the normal range. “Sleep is essential to being in your best physical and mental health,” Mehta said.

Cultivate gratitude and joy

“Spend at least five minutes a day doing joyful things,” said Lavretsky, who instructs his patients to also practice gratitude each morning upon waking. “Focus on what you have rather than what you don’t have.”

Research shows that happiness and a positive attitude can lead to healthier behaviors and a longer, healthier life.

“You don’t have to wait until you’re exhausted,” Lavretsky said. “You don’t have to wait for a heart attack to start practicing yoga.”

One of two pedestrians hit by a vehicle in the Wellington suburb of Thorndon last week remains in serious condition, while the other has been dismissed.

The first patient was initially in critical condition, following the crash at St Mary St in Thorndon at around 6.50pm last Wednesday.

Their condition has since become serious. They remain in intensive care.

The other person had been released after being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Things understands the couple were crossing at St Mary St when the two were hit by a large ute, which was turning right from Tinakori Rd.

On Monday, a police spokesman said no charges had been laid at this stage. Investigations into the crash were ongoing and are expected to take some time.

A resident who walked and drove through Thorndon regularly said there was a lack of crosswalks in the area and it was often difficult to see pedestrians.

“When I drive home, it’s really hard to see people, especially when it’s raining and it’s dark,” the woman, who declined to be named, said Thursday morning.

Another local, Courtney MacDonald, said the area has always been particularly busy and she believes there is a national road safety issue.

“I think there’s a problem across the country with sharing our roads,” MacDonald said.
