2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee adds 4xe plug-in hybrid to its lineup

Jeep’s flagship SUV is about to be electrified.

The 2022 two-row Jeep Grand Cherokee, to be unveiled online Wednesday, will add a plug-in hybrid electric version to its lineup.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe will join a 4xe version of the Jeep Wrangler as the brand’s first two plug-in hybrids available in the United States. Electrified versions of the Compass and Renegade are available in Europe.

“This is another important step towards realizing our global vision of zero emission freedom,” said Christian Meunier, CEO of the Jeep brand. “By 2025, we plan to offer a fully electric Jeep vehicle in every SUV segment. “

The introduction of an additional plug-in hybrid vehicle follows news that Jeep’s parent company Stellantis is planning a Ram 1500 battery-electric pickup and Dodge muscle car in 2024. The company, which was born this year of the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the manufacturer Peugeot PSA Group, have pledged 35 billion dollars (30 billion euros) of investments related to electrification by the middle of the decade.

This is the fifth generation of the Grand Cherokee, which made its debut in 1992 by smashing a window in Cobo Hall in Detroit, now TCF Center, as part of that year’s annual auto show. The new two-row Grand Cherokee shares a vehicle architecture with the three-row Grand Cherokee L, launched earlier this year.

Both vehicles are being built at Stellantis’ new assembly facility in Detroit. The Mack Factory, which sits on the site of a former engine factory complex, was the first new vehicle assembly plant built in the city in decades.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe contains two electric motors and a 400-volt battery, which is under the floor and protected by skid plates, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine mated to an eight-speed automatic, according to Jeep. . It aims to deliver 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.

When it comes to range, the 4xe targets 25 miles of all-electric range and around 57 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent), and it uses regenerative braking to maintain or increase the load, the company said.

The non-electrified Grand Cherokee offers two engine choices, a standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 rated at 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque or an optional 5.7-liter V8 rated at 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet torque, according to Jeep. The V6 can handle 6,200 pounds of towing and the V8 reaches 7,200 pounds.

The 4xe and non-electrified versions are available in several trim levels, including Trailhawk. The company noted that the Trailhawk 4xe “conquered” the Rubicon Trail, a popular 4×4 route in California, using all-electric power.

Because it’s a Jeep, the Grand Cherokee also touts its all-terrain chops, with three different 4×4 systems.

Its exterior promises a “slim and sculpted exterior” and a lowered conical roof to improve aerodynamics as well as a wider and wider seven-slot grille. Inside, the Grand Cherokee features a “realigned” center console for driver accessibility, 16-way adjustable front seats, with some trim offering massage, 10.1-inch digital screens and a front passenger screen. 10.25-inch camera available and a rear entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV, according to the company.

As with other recent new Jeep models, the Grand Cherokee can be purchased with a McIntosh sound system and Uconnect 5 infotainment system.

Standard safety features include full-speed collision warning with active braking and pedestrian / cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, and rear park assist sensors with stop. A night vision camera with pedestrian and animal detection, sleepy driver detection, and a 360-degree panoramic vision camera system are some of the security options available.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to be available later this year in North America, with the Grand Cherokee 4xe to follow early next year. The price has not been published.
